Old Faithful!

The Yellowstone post was getting long, so I split it into two posts. The impetus for going to Yellowstone at all was to visit Old Faithful, one of the largest geothermal geysers in the world. This rare phenomenon happens under only strict geological conditions, sending streams of boiling water straight up into the air at regular intervals.

I remember my grandfather talking about how impressed he was with Old Faithful, but I didn't have high expectations. I think I expected some kind of glorified water fountain or something. But it really was pretty incredible:

Not to mention, the area around it looks absolutely alien. The bacteria that thrive in these boiling temperatures give off fluorescent oranges, reds, and blues. There are six to eight other, smaller geysers within walking distance of Old Faithful, each one having a different pH, and therefore different color bacteria growths and water colors.
