Day 3:
Miles on Lucy: 63,400
Have I mentioned that it's been snowing? Sorry. I'm still pissed about that. Since we're in town, Maria didn't sign Alex up for daycare yesterday. We were meant to watch her all morning, and since we can't go outside because of the frostbite, we're playing inside.
I've been asked to play Barbies while Cat is in the shower. Don't get me started on all the things wrong with Barbies (causing terrible body image issues being #1). Also, they probably come alive when we're not looking. At any rate, I was pleased to see that Maria and Phil had bought Alex a variety of shades of Barbie. There are several white Barbies, a couple of black Barbies, and one that looks kind of....Filipino? I noticed that the two Black barbies were lying- unplayed with- together on the other side of the room. Our conversation went something like this:
Me: Alex, do you like to play with those two Barbies over there?
Alex: Yeah! They're the two prettiest Barbies
M: *awww* What are their names?
A: Chocolate and Candy
M: .....
A: Yeah, they're both brown so they have to stay together over there
M: (!!!!!!!!)
All I can say is, thank the Lord for NPR. I had just heard this story before we left for the trip. I think I handled it ok, but it made me realize that kids are a lot more perceptive to the world around them than we give them credit for. Their little brains pick up everything, and they process things in terms of their current worldview: hence brown=chocolate.
